Ana Ivanovic Wins French Open, Will Become WTA’s Number One Ranked Player

Ana Ivanovic of Serbia won the French Open title on Saturday defeating Dinara Safina of Russia 6-4, 6-3 in the final.

She had two breaks to one in the first set and then grabbed the vital break she needed in the third game of the second set to win in 1 hour 38 minutes.

It was a first Grand Slam title for the 20-year-old from Belgrade and also for a Serbian woman and follows compatriot Novak Djokovic’s breakthrough win in the men’s Australian Open.

Ivanovic had lost in the final here last year to Justine Henin and in the Australian Open final in January to Maria Sharapova.

She will be the new world No. 1 when the updated WTA rankings are released on Monday taking over from Sharapova.
